The Compressor Intake Filter

Air compressors play an important role in an industrial environment, providing the compressed air to the pneumatic controls, valves, process applications, and various instruments throughout the plant. Corrosive gaseous contaminants in the intake airstream of your compressor can inhibit air flow, impede heat dissipation, and cause vibration. The end result: decreased efficiency. To protect your compressor from corrosion, Purafil offers a comprehensive Corrosion Assessment service, available through our research and development laboratory, and the Compressor Intake Filter, a dry-chemical scrubber designed to remove corrosive gases from intake air.

Corrosion Assessment
Compressor damage caused by corrosion directly affects repair costs and maintenance downtime. As part of Purafil's Corrosion Assessment service, Corrosion Classification Coupons are used to determine the level of corrosion present in your compressor's intake air. By analyzing these coupons, Purafil's laboratory can determine the types and levels of corrosive gases present in the airstream and recommend the level of filtration needed.

Purafil developed the Compressor Intake Filter (CIF) to protect your compressor from corrosion. The CIF is a multi-stage, highly efficient air purification system that removes gases and particulates. Purafil's CIF is compatible with most major air compressor manufacturers, including Ingersoll-Rand, Elliott, Demag, IHI, Joy Cooper, and Atlas Copco.

With the results of Purafil's Corrosion Assessment, your local Purafil representative will be able to recommend the appropriate level of filtration and the specifc Purafil media required to protect your compressor. The Compressor Intake Filter (CIF) is a multi-stage system that features filters for particulate removal as well as Purafil's patented, dry-chemical media for removal of corrosive gases. Air moves through the CIF in several sections, each filtering the air and removing pollutants:

  • Section 1: The first section of the CIF is a MERV 6 prefilter designed to remove particulates measuring 10 microns in diameter or greater. The purpose of this filter is to protect the following stage of Purafil chemical media from becoming coated with dust, which would reduce its efficiency.
  • Section 2: Following the prefilter is a stage of Purafil's patented, dry-chemical media. Purafil media within the CIF reacts with and neutralizes corrosive contaminants in the intake air. Purafil offers a variety of patented media depending on the types of corrosive gases present in your compressor's intake air. Multiple stages of media may be required to eliminate all gases of concern.
  • Section 3: The last CIF section is the final particulate filter. This filter is a high efficiency filter, which removes particulates equal to or greater than 1 to 2 microns.
