Water-Wastewater Toxic Gas Scrubbers

Facilities storing hazardous quantities of chlorine (Cl2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) or ammonia (NH3) must invest in emergency standby equipment to prevent accidental chemical releases.

Purafil’s dry-chemical Emergency Gas Scrubber (EGS) is designed to remove the entire contents of a fully loaded Cl2/SO2/NH3 cylinder in a worst-case release scenario. The EGS works with cylinders storing 150 pounds, 1 ton, 2 tons or 3 tons or more of Cl2/SO2/NH3 and discharges less than 25 parts per billion.   With over 200 toxic gas scrubber installations world-wide, you can trust Purafil to protect your environment.

Purafil manufactures two designs of the EGS:
    1.  Aluminum, multi-stage scrubber with horizontal airflow
    2.  Fiberglass vessel with vertical airflow

How Toxic Gas Scrubbers Work:
Chlorine (Cl2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) or ammonia (NH3) is detected inside the room by an air monitoring sensor.  The sensor activates a NEMA 4X Control Panel which in turn activates a blower.  The blower will completely remove the contents of the largest cylinder within 30 minutes and exhaust hazard-free air into the atmosphere.

The EGS is designed to achieve the following:
• Protect personnel and neighbors from exposure to toxic gas.
• Mitigate the entire contents of a fully loaded cylinder in a worst-case release scenario.
• Reduce toxic gas concentrations to less than 25 parts per billion at discharge.
• Exceed the requirements of the Uniform Fire Code and the US EPA Clean Air Act.

Why choose a Purafil Emergency Gas Scrubber?
Performance: The EGS has undergone challenge testing of full-scale bed depth.
High Efficiency: The EGS is 99.99999% efficient at removing toxic gas.
Ease of Use: Systems require no maintenance, other than routine blower checks and media sampling.
Safety: New and expired media is UL Classified, safe to handle and landfill disposable.

Water-Wastewater Toxic Gas Scrubbing Media

Complementary Media Life Analysis: Purafil’s laboratory analyzes samples of media from your air scrubber to determine the remaining life. A date for replacement can then be scheduled to ensure the protected space is not exposed to gas breakthrough or media is replaced prematurely.

Instead of using toxic liquid caustic to neutralize gases, the EGS uses dry-scrubbing media. These media have indefinite shelf life - if they’re not used, you don't need to replace them.

Typical Purafil Water Wastewater Corrosion Control and Toxic Gas Scrubbing Media:

Purafil® Chlorosorb® Ultra Media – Removes chlorine gas (Cl2) in below freezing temperatures.   This is the highest capacity available in the industry with 15% minimum by weight chlorine gas removal capacity.

PuraCarb® AM Media – Targets ammonia (NH3) and amines.

Purafil® CSO™ Media - Emergency removal of chlorine (Cl2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) gases.

Whether new or spent, the above media are:
 • non-toxic
 • non-hazardous
 • landfill disposable
 • UL Classified
 * Chlorosorb® Ultra functions at -40° Fahrenheit

Because we manufacture our own media, we have quality control and can guarantee availability and fast delivery. We also offer value-added laboratory services to ensure optimal media and system performance.

Water-Wastewater Toxic Gas Scrubber Equipment

Dry scrubbers have several advantages over conventional wet scrubbers. For instance, dry scrubbers require significantly less maintenance than wet scrubbers. They have just one moving part—a blower. No need to hassle with pumps, spray nozzles, or pH controls!

Dry scrubbers are much safer, too. Instead of using toxic liquid caustic, they neutralize gases with non-toxic dry-scrubbing pellets. These pellets are called media, and they permanently transform gases into harmless solids.

Unlike liquid caustic, dry-scrubbing media are immediately available for instantaneous reaction, regardless of the load rate. With wet scrubbers, you have to measure the amount of gas fed into the scrubber.

Dry scrubbers discharge less than 25 parts per billion, but wet scrubbers discharge 1-4 parts per million.

Typical Water and Wastewater Toxic Gas Scrubbing Purafil Equipment- Common applications include facilities storing hazardous quantities of chlorine (Cl2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) or ammonia (NH3).

Emergency Gas Scrubber- Designed to remove the entire contents of a fully loaded cylinder or storage units containing 150 pounds, 1-ton, 2-tons, 3-tons or more of chlorine (Cl2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) or ammonia (NH3) gas releases due to a leak. Discharges less than 25 parts per billion.

Chlorine Drum Scrubber - Sized for airflows up to 500 cfm, the Chlorine Drum Scrubber is used for nuisance chlorine (Cl2) applications such as changing cylinders less than 150 lb.

    Technical Services

Purafil offers a broad range of technical services from circuit board failure analysis, media life analysis and on-site consultations to ensure clean air.

Media Life Analysis - As a complimentary service, Purafil’s laboratory analyzes samples of media from your air scrubber to determine the remaining life. A date for replacement can then be scheduled to ensure the protected space is not exposed to gas breakthrough or media is replaced prematurely.

On-Site Consultation - Purafil has established a worldwide network of factory-trained representatives to provide customers with timely, local support. Local representatives are available to assist you with site surveys, environmental evaluation, and air scrubber specification.
